Our Opportunity:

The PC Core Technology group at Charles Schwab is looking for a skilled Software Application Engineer to join their Service Availability and Engineering (SAvE) team which is responsible for providing timely, knowledgeable, friendly enterprise-class production support for a suite of cross enterprise products and services. In this position you will help build a more sustainable platform through the investigation of production issues and development of systems to analyze our environments, and predict future problems to provide an ideal client experience.

What you’ll do:

This individual will be expected to support applications across the PC Core Technology platform to ensure the applications meet Availability Metrics and Service Level Agreements. This includes: Return to Service activities; involvement in On-Call rotations; building/enhancing Monitoring Dashboards and Alerts; and investigating and providing solutions to production issues. This individual will also be expected to contribute to Schwab’s journey toward maturing our DevOps processes by establishing automated recovery processes, streamlining our monitoring processes, and improving our software development practice. This position is not full time software development; however, there will be opportunity to perform defect fixes, and enhancements.

  • Provide 24x7 support for applications across the PC Core Technology platform.

  • Analyze and resolve application issues in production.

  • Document resolutions in Schwab’s Knowledge Article System.

  • Develop and enhance monitoring dashboards and alerts process to increase availability of the application.

  • Perform troubleshooting/debugging, issue triaging, defect fixes; and enhancements for supported applications.

  • Develop/Improve Production Readiness process to ensure the team is ready to support features deployed to production.

  • Communicating across the organization to maintain awareness, direct restoration efforts, and identify situationally appropriate knowledge workers.

  • Work with Team Lead (Sr. Staff level) to design and implement process improvement in our Production Services and Operations.

This individual must be self-motivated with a drive to gain a deep understanding of the systems; willing to seek answers from subject matter experts; ready/able to change focus quickly; and ready to respond to questions about the nature of the platform.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience developing applications for Windows platforms using Microsoft .NET technologies, specifically using C#.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience with REST web services.

  • Good judgment and the ability to handle stressful situations.

  • Excellent debugging skills across a variety of integrated systems.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to successfully interact with business partners and other technology teams.

Preferred skills include:

  • Experience in Providing Support of Highly Available Application support.

  • Experience in on-call rotation.

  • Experience with implementing Alerts processes as a preventative measures.

  • Experience in troubleshooting/debugging application issues, and determining resolution with various areas. For example: IT Operations, Change Management, Availability, Network team, Server team, Product Management, etc.

  • Strong skill to debug and read/understand code.

  • Solid understanding of application architecture: application layer, database layer, network layer.

  • The ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, geographically dispersed environment.

  • Flexibility to support all contingencies and shifting priorities.

  • Accountability to work independently.

  • Exposed to CI/CD processes.

  • Experience with Monitoring Tools: Splunk, AppDynamics, or Zenoss.
