Our Opportunity:

Corporate Legal Services provides legal advice to all aspects of Schwab's business. This in-house paralegal position will be in our Institutional & Retail Legal Team (IRLG) which serves as enterprise counsel for the client-facing businesses of Schwab, including Investor Services, Advisor Services, Corporate and Retirement Services, and multiple investment adviser affiliates. This paralegal position is within the Retail sub-team but will also provide support to other attorneys in IRLG as opportunities become available.

What you’ll do:

The Paralegal will principally carry out the following tasks:

  • Assist with review, preparation and filing of perennial federal and state regulatory document updates, including Form ADV Part 2 and Franchise Disclosure Document

  • Assist with internal and external audits and similar reviews, including tracking project status, coordinating with SMEs and counsel/consultants.

  • Play coordination role for lawyer participation in business governance and risk councils and committees, including organizing meeting materials and tracking deliverables.

  • Locate, organize, and research relevant state and federal legislative and regulatory materials, including press, law firm and industry group commentary on same.

  • Maintain and update templates for delivery of legal advice.

  • Develop and maintain searchable database legal guidance, including attorney-client privileged internal and outside counsel memos.

  • Special projects as needed to support new corporate or legal team initiatives.

Other possible tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the organization and review of documents submitted or received from third parties ( e.g. , responses to or from regulators or litigants).

  • Under the direction of an attorney, perform legal research tasks to support legal review and analysis.

  • Assist with managing legal deliverables on key projects and serving as a liaison as appropriate

  • Undergraduate degree.

  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability with a record of taking initiative to make improvements, such as the creation of more efficient processes and systems

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills -- able to communicate clearly, directly, concisely and diplomatically, knowing how, when and what to communicate.

  • Highly developed PC skills, including demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.

  • Highly-developed legal and general research skills

Strong organizational and administrative skills with the ability to anticipate, improvise, and adapt for optimal resolutions.

  • Highly productive, able to work effectively and independently on a variety of projects simultaneously and prioritize competing priorities on high-visibility projects.

  • Results-oriented style delivering outstanding quality and timeliness with strong attention to detail

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong partnerships within and outside the organization

  • Comfortable working independently and with minimal supervision in a fast-paced setting, maintaining grace under pressure

  • Experience in an in-house setting and experience with the financial services industry is preferred but not required

  • At least 5 years of prior experience in a paralegal, legal assistant or similar role is preferred.
